Bleeding Knees, Dry Tears

I'm a HUGE fan of Kukula's work! She's having an upcoming show at CorpoNason gallery, opening on November 8th. This piece, "Little Guides" is my favorite from the show. I love the mix of melancholy with a sense of childhood nostalgia and an erotic touch.
"Dry Tears" is only 5x7, but is incredibly detailed and contains a detached sense of sadness in a desolate enviornment. I dig how she's dressed and curious about her scrapped knee, its as if we are glimpsing the story at the aftermath of something heartbreaking. I wish Kukula well next week! although I'm sure she'll sell out.

New Prints....

'Nadja'
'The Oracle'
Two new prints are up in my print shop Baby Fangs. These were my two favorites from my last show and both originals went to lovely people. They were created to face each other and are kin of the surrealist and supernatural.

Wednesday Lovelies

Riikka Sormunen hails from the magical sounding city of Helsinki and makes some of the most interesting and refreshing paintings I've stumbled on lately. She is an alumni of the sweet Internet magazine, Ruby Mag of Spain.

In the past I admit I was suspicious of digital artists (aside from the amazing! Ray Cesar) but lately I've been enchanted by the work of Natalie Shau, who will have a solo show at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in March of 2009. This portrait is my favorite thus far....I have a thing for the palest and bloodiest of beauties, especially when mixed with a religious vibe.

The lovely Tara McPherson has some new work forthcoming in the group show 'Inside Nostalghia', also at Dorothy Circus Gallery, which boasts, among others, to have work by the apocalypse queen Camille Rose Garcia, who it seems rarely participates in group shows.(Someone get me to Rome!)
I saw Tara's work in person over at Jonathan LeVine gallery earlier this year and was blown away by the near flawless execution of her heartless otherworldly ladies. Via.

Although I don't consider myself a person interested in politics; I find that it mostly distracts me from my inner fictional life, I try to know what's going on during election campaign fever, to have the most educated vote as possible....It may be true that we will all be taking a gamble on our vote, not truly knowing if our elected President will be who he says he will be, I still think, especially as a woman, that its important to go out and vote.

I find this photo to be incredibly touching and human, a little spy slice of love.

As for me, I'll be married to my love in ten days!

The strongest weapon in the world is the teenage girl...

Kime Buzzelli, is a busy little bee. As owner of rad boutique Show Pony , she is also an amazing painter and has lovely new work over at Dirty Pilot.
"Untitled # 11".  This piece makes me nostalgic for the books I worshipped in high school, such as Francesca Lia Block's collection of modern day fairy tale books.
"What Fools Are Made Of" This is my favorite from the group. I like how she uses line work, color and subject matter to convey these narrative moments of love and fashion.

Also, I've been tagged for the first time! by the lovely Lelia of Red Heart Cult.

7 Random Facts:

1. I have an obsession with teeth. I paint them and write about them. I even own several silver teeth charms I got from my love the first x-mas we spent together.
2. I sleep with my deck of tarot cards beneath my pillow.
3. I have watched "Fight Club" more times than I can count and used to not be able to fall asleep without having it on. I love Marla Singer's character and quote her often.
4. As a child I longed to be a boy and to sprout wings. I used to live in trees.
5. A few of my favorite sounds are: ice cubes crackling in a glass before a drink is poured over them, rain against my air conditioner during the summer, and my grandmother's voice when I enter her house for a visit.
6. I love the smell of books. New books, old books, I love them all! I often press my nose into them before I buy them in vintage stores. I am currently reading 3 lovely books right now.
7. Anne Sexton is my favorite poet from my youth and I have her initials tattooed on my right wrist for good luck and inspiration during my own writing. Her work shaped my early desires to be a poet which have since evolved into becoming a fiction writer using poetic language.

I tag my lovely cousin, E the Bee of EstellaAura Vintage. Maybe this will make her start a blog!

Misguided Arrows

Not to be outdone by NYC, there are some wonderful galleries here in Philly that continue to bring in the art that I admire and obsess over, such as the lovely Art Star gallery located in Northern Liberties. Opening this Saturday, October 18th is the Kathleen Lolley exhibit that I have been waiting ever so long for! The show, titled "Lost, Picking Flowers," should be filled with amazing paintings...... I plan to hop over there for some opening night photos, but here are a couple of new prints that Art Star is offering by Kathleen Lolley now.
"Misguided Arrows" edition of 50. I'm interested of her use of dark colors that further illumintate the glow of the tree in this night time setting. I especially love the use of Anthropomorphism in her work and never tire of it. The emotion is so compelling here, it is both tender and tragic and relevant to our current troubles.
"Belly of the Beast" is another favorite. I love the owl bed and the sleeping child, another tender image that also has an element of the strange. Her work slightly reminds me of "Where the Wild Things Are" in the best way possible. I long to own an original!

Dangerous Darlings

These covetable shoes are a collaboration from the House of the Rodarte Sisters and Christian Louboutin. I read somewhere that the inspiration for the shoes was the french saying of "an iron fist in a velvet glove." Taking this saying a bit forward, I researched medieval witch torture devices and noticed how similar the look of the shoes were to the Iron Maiden. Although this might be a direct reference to how fashion can be at times "torture" (especially when it comes to shoes...) I find them strangely beautiful with a feeling of danger, elements that I love to use in all aspects of my personal work.
It's interesting to think that there was a time in our recent history when women were persecuted for being different, sexual or strange..and now we have a woman running for Vice President whom, if given supreme power could plunge women's right into the dark ages and has actually been blessed against witchcraft! Equally interesting is the reclaiming of these devices that pop up in forward fashion. Ironic and so very visually pleasing.....Each color/spike variation of the shoe is lovely. The netted tights also by the Rodarte sisters, add an interesting mix of shapes and textures.

My preference would be these black on black ones. Even though they are the most dangerous with the spikes on the top of the shoes, I would love to wear them out with the right little black dress.....they could even be used as a weapon on the walk home.......
Since I could never afford ( or wear them with the grace of models.....) they'll be popping up in a a painting or two for my upcoming show at Topstitch in the dead of winter, February.
