japanese artist kahori maki makes incredibly lovely paintings with a mix of highly detailed floral motifs and feminine portraiture. i dig the collage/inky quality she achieves, and of course how here, the female subject is masked and covered in overgrowth.

'grey empire'
i'm seriously hating myself for not going to see the new work by Camille Rose Garcia at the Scope art fair in NYC last week, although i did make several serious attempts. Jonathan LeVine gallery hosted the booth at the fair filled with the dark delights of the doom and gloom queen of the pop surrealist set. the booth featured a wonderful installation and large paintings and drawings featuring raven haired rock-a-billy ladies decked out in disney dresses surrounded by her skull butterfly familiars in various states of distress and agony. although known and often copied for her layered and drippy backgrounds, the new pieces show the wood grain of the panels she paints on, adding to the patterns she often overwhelms her landscapes with. the inclusion of fairy tale font in her cryptic texts add a nostalgic sense to the work, comforting the viewer although the end is near friends! the future may always look bleak to Miss Garcia but I'll always be along for the ride, no matter how far down the dark rabbit hole she takes me. to head down there yourself, check out all of the new work here.

the flocked wallpaper shown her is available for sale!

milkland

'milkland bandit'
'the pale carousel'

the one lady show over at the black apple has just released a new set of prints from her online show 'milkland'. the pale, milk skinned girls in this new series appear peacefully at work or play in creamy shaded dreamscapes. they often appear alone or paired with equally milky creatures and albino friends. the muted color palette marks a sophisticated departure for miss emily martin; she seems in even more control of her colors, using them to set a serene tone for the inhabitants of her imagined world. the soothing and curious effect they have on their viewers make the pieces suitable for a nursery or in my case, my own world of art clutter and books.

natalia fabia

'patty-cake'
natalia fabia is an L.A artist who i've been watching for a while now. her new show 'hooker dreamscape' just opened at Corey Helford gallery and includes escapist paintings of 'hookers' in various stages of comfort and camaraderie. these new works represent a bit of a departure for natalia, at the youngish age of 25, her painting skills have really evolved to a nearly hyper realistic state. Infused with elements of colorful, playful fashion (with the inclusion of her own handmade jewelry on the subjects) and the explorations of positive relationships between women, each piece resonates with the young modern woman who is unafraid to succeed and express herself within her own 'dreamscape.'

jonas lofgren

lately i've been having a love affair with sweden via all the amazing art/books/ films i've been into lately. i first came across the above image of lydia deets by jonas lofgren in the last lovely issue of 'lula' magazine. his work is mostly done with graphite and watercolor on paper and many of his young girlies wear masks. he has a shop which sells prints of his recent lula work including portraits of margot tenenbaum, enid coleslaw and the above image. hop on over to his myspace page where you can send him love notes. or not.

the state of things.

'half-life' a new smallish painting. prints in the print shop.
inspirations: tim walker, novelist shelley jackson, from her book 'half life' which tells the non-linear tale ofm a girl decides to extract the head of her sleeping sister whose body she shares. this is for the art auction at the south philly tap room tomorrow night for the lovely mew gallery. i'll be showing there again in august!
i recently decided to move my studio space from our large 'dining room' area back up to my suite. i have 3 'stations' to work at, one large one to paint, one to write and one to make blood milk jewelry. its working out well despite being overwhelmed by my many collections and objects....finding places for things has been a bit challenging.....
a portion of my art collection. v hates the chaotic layout of this wall but i love to stack/cluster art. i argued that it's very american to have so much space between paintings.:) this wall has 2 jon todd paintings, 2 jenny bird paintings, a lily piri drawing and print and various other coveted pieces. i have some more space to the left that i plan on attacking soon with some work downstairs.......
