a year older and foxes.

lately i've been obsessed with foxes. their jawbones, their teeth. i've even begun writing a story about a man with a fox head & a petite albino named veda. i don't know why or how i begin my obsessions, but once fixed, they are firmly planted for a time until they unravel or stay put. anyway, i recently stumbled on the new work of lindsey carr aka little robot. her paintings have always been beautiful, but her new work incorporates a wider color palate, a more sophisticated hand and of course, foxes. prints of her work can be found here, as well as the above 2 only here.
further reading on her fox muse here.
images of the above two works framed here.

kate macdowell does myth in porcelain

icarus
bad seed
venus
daphne
today is one of those days that i wish i was back in bed, snuggled under a mountain of warm blankets dead to the world. however, being awake and regretting it, it was a nice surprise to be introduced to sculptor kate macdowell via my muse d.v. (thanks!) her work has a soft, ghostly quality to it and some of the pieces even light up, revealing more inner mysteries. take a look at her whole portfolio, i promise you'll fall in love....

jim houser on fecal face.

i recently had the opportunity to pop by jonathan levine gallery to see the new jim houser show, make room for the emptiness. his work is truly stunning in person and i felt very emotional after i left. i also had the chance to take photos & write a review of it for fecal face, which you can check out here.

mothers & daughters

my mom, who is pictured on the left, owns a very successful scrap booking store out in new york where i'm from. i owe a lot to my mom, she's always encouraged my creative goals in more ways than one and she is a constant reminder that i can make anything happen if i work hard. her store, scrapper's playground recently started a blog where she makes video tutorials and posts about her latest projects. i'm also very excited that her shop was recently featured in the local newspaper. while traditional scrap booking may not be for every one, i've found lots of products at her shop that i've incorporated into my work, such as the paper i use in my paintings & the inks and dyes i use to make my price tags for bloodmilk. i'll even be teaching a writing class there next month!
my grandmother, also pictured on the left with an advent box she designed, (which was featured here) works at the shop with my mom and has been a creative person her entire life. i remember when i was younger she used to have a kiln her basement where she would fire ceramics and teach painting classes. while this is the month to be thankful; i just wanted to take a moment from my normal posts to be thankful for the creative, supportive and talented women in my family who have taught me a lot about how to be my own person.

stella im hultberg does string

i've been a long time fan of the melancholy femmes by brooklyn artist stella im hultberg. however, i find that these smoky and bony women are most successful when their is a hint of a narrative element to the work, such as the inclusion of colored string in her newest body of work 'penumbra' at corpo nason gallery. i find the image of these tangled women to be strange and striking. take a peek for yourself here.

mina hawker for bloodmilk series

i just listed the first piece of my mina hawker series in my etsy shop. i'll be listing more each day for those of you who live outside of philly. this piece is a lariat and features an antique keyhole that i've been holding onto since last year! as well as a vintage skeleton key and a couple gem bits of snake vertebrae. i'm braving etsy once again!

true self @ jonathan levine gallery

while visiting jonathan levine gallery for fecal face for jim houser's solo show, i took some shots of 'true self' a group show curated by gary baseman. baseman asked a bunch of artists to paint something that reflected their true selves. here are some of my favorites:

adam wallacavage
mark ryden as a bee? perfect.
detail of travis lampe's painting.
james jean.
& my personal favorite by lola:

catholica melancholia

some of you have been asking about my etsy hiatus. lately i've been holding back in part because it feels so special just to have it mostly in my shop in philly. i can speak to the person who's buying it face to face, they can get a better feel of who i am. however, the written element of the work is lost this way & i really miss it. plus, there are so many great people who i've met from etsy who buy my work & i miss that too. therefore, i've been mentally revamping the shop and have come up with new lines, & ghost willing, i should have some new blood online soon, and of course surely before the holiday rush.

the first line i want to talk about here is called 'catholica melancholia'. this isn't something entirely new, i've been working with the anatomies of rosaries for a while now. these strange pieces will be sort of divinatory pieces. although a root of them is catholic imagery (such as my favorite lady, our lady of the 7 sorrows, as seen above), these pieces will be blended with other spiritual practices; native american beliefs & divinatory ritual items, such as hand painted runes. what draws me to catholic imagery is something i touched on earlier with my nun post. i find it strange and out of reach, a mystery. by combining this mystery with the spiritual practices that i actually practice is my way of making hybrid prayer pieces. kind of like rosaries/ meditation pieces for a future dystopia.

of course, these images and visual inspirations will also worm their way into the new show i'm currently working on called 'planchette', which is based on the writings of my twin, danielle vogel. more on that soon!

self portraits!

hi there! i just returned home from an amazing time in san fran! thank you to everyone who entered my contest. you all look wonderful and your written entries were lovely too. i had a hard time picking a winner so i choose randomly again by assigning everyone a number and randomly picking one! so therefore i'd like to announce that Alana, the artist who painted herself above with a string of paper dolls is the winner!
