swooning at the river of oblivion: sneak peek

there is 20 inches of snow outside and all i can think of its selling off a rib bone so i can go see jennybird alcantara's new body of work, swooning at the river of oblivion, next month in CA. she is in my top 5 all time favorite artists and i'm really into the ink/ocean theme she has going on in these sneak peeks! i can't wait to see more!

a dagger in the heart.

my first trunk show ever was last night and it was amazing! thanks to everyone who came out and to the ladies of omoi for being so lovely in this gritty city. i had planned a large shop update tonight and got some news that kicked the heart out of me so it's been postponed to an all day update tomorrow, a live feed from my studio, for those of you xxxmas shopping for yourself or a lucky love.

sienna freeman.

i've been a bit distracted//exhausted from getting ready for my trunk show which is happening on wednesday night at omoi. i ran around the city all day handing out my lovely tarot card esq flyers that the lovely lovely leila designed; and when i dropped some off at topstitch i noticed a sienna freeman flyer. i've seen these incredible collages around before but today, when placed next to mine (with my favorite max ernst collage on it....) i felt a little electric shock. they are all really lovely & i have to go & see them in person while they are up at b2 to find out what all the resin is about.

audrey kawasaki does a prelude

i had the amazing opportunity to see audrey kawasaki's (who was sweet as pie in person!) new solo show, hajimari-a prelude, at jonathan levine gallery in nyc at her opening last night. the gallery was packed with an interesting mix of young and old, some of which were experiencing their very first time in a gallery. although i was there on assignment, i couldn't help but put a few photos i took of her ghostly and lovely work on here right away. please look for an upcoming review on fecalface.com.

susan jamison does albino deer

i've seen susan jamison's work around the internet for a while now, (she was even in the first show phantasmaphile curated) but it wasn't until i went searching for proper images of albino deer to satisfy my latest obsession that i really looked at her work. it reminds me a little of one of my favorite painters jennybird alcantara & i'm interested in the repetition of the odd, bald, tattooed//veined figure. it's weird and beautiful & made of egg tempra (!!!) i'm particularly hypnotized by the above three with the lovely inclusions of the albino deer. i just wish i could find the images bigger!
p.s. have any of you seen an albino deer in real life? please tell me the story!!!!

kris lewis does the sea

i had the good fortune to see one of kris lewis's paintings in person at the unlikely venue of a fantastic burlesque show. even though the lighting for such a painting was poor, i could still see the magnificence of the piece. i've been recently enamored with these recent works of lone figures set against the dark waters of what may be icy waters. with his nearly hyper realistic style, lewis creates haunting figures that appear only slightly off, as if touched by madness, epiphany or loneliness, which are of course the main reasons i'm so drawn in to his work.

fantastic mr. fox! & fantastic roald dahl & the cult of wes anderson.

this movie has made my top list for the year! & seems to be one that i will watch over and over again when it comes out on dvd! roald dahl was the first writer to really incite my reading fever. i read matilda in third grade & fell in love. i still remember how exciting it was to hold that book, with it's red foil letters and clever illustrations. i went to see the wonder fantastic mr. fox the day before yesterday in the small town where my lovely grandparents went. i went by myself to a nice independent theatre and was one of only of 5 people in there. it was amazing! the movie is impressive stylistically and i loved how wes anderson really combined his film style with that of roald dahl's writing. it had all the things i love in a movie, spot on aesthetics, an incredible soundtrack, funny bits and emotional resonance. even the voices were chosen so perfectly. i really recommend this movie to everyone, i'll even be seeing it again soon!

femke hiemstra does rock candy

i've been in long time love with femke hiemstra. her smoky and detailed fantasy landscapes are often coupled with outrageous characters, from vegetables to the floating head of marie antoinette. she often paints these dark beauties on unexpected objects, such as vintage book covers and within small tin cases. lately i've been researching color palates & am in awe of femke's diverse & sophisticated color choices. when i made the jump to painting from spending years of cultivating images with words, the most troubling part was and still is color. as i work towards my new show that has been happily pushed back until next year, i'll be sharing more work that inspires me in both form and color. for now, you can pick up a copy of her splendid book, rock candy, which would make a perfect christmas gift for the art lover or art lover to be. she's also showing new work this month at seattle's roq la rue with another favorite, junko mizuno, for all you lucky west coasters.
