alex garcia does gray ladies.

even though i downed a cup full of fizzy, lemony sleepy time medicine for my cold, i can't sleep. instead i'm burning my eyeballs online in the dark and lusting after alex garcia's work. not only does he paint these amazing gray ladies, he tattoos like a dream. i recently purchased some really lovely birch wood panels from a friend of a friend who owns the most amazing wood shop / magical saw dust den that used to be a casket factory. some of the panels are in thin long shapes and i've been thinking of just painting an arm or hand. i immediately recalled this above piece 'promises promises'. i love it for so many reasons, the honey comb, the scissors, the tattoos......

benjamin cottman does dead artists.

diane arbus.
these tiny tiny portraits of dead artists by benjamin cottman have me drooling and doe eyed. i especially love the above one of diane arbus and the ones on his site of surrealists hans bellmer and man ray. they are like small graphite death masks speaking from beyond the grave......

riry tukioka.

i love these simple black and white drawings of floating heads by japanese artist riry tukioka. their expressions are so sexy // creepy. the top one reminds me of blade runner and the bottom one reminds me of my roommate//bettlejuice snake head.

lola guerrera does white.

the winter is hard for me & i know i am not alone in this. in some way i find that spanish artist lola guerrera's work speaks to this inner battling. she wraps everything in her apartment up in clean white paper before taking photographs of it. the results are these shots that make me feel cold, lonely and odd, just like how winter does.

sophie blackall does missed connections

who doesn't love stalking the missed connection sections of newspapers and craig's list? i've always thought of "missed connections" as interesting literary devices, but it wasn't until i stumbled upon these little beauties by sophie blackall that i saw they translate equally as interesting in the visual art realm. i found these awhile ago and meant to share them here but forgot. i was reminded of them by sophie's etsy featured seller interview.
prints & originals can be found here.

have one on me: joanna newsom

the ethereal joanna newsom is set to release a triple (!!!) album at the close of next month. this is mouth watering news to me, especially since i was heartbroken at not being able to get tickets to her show in march at the unitarian church here in philly. for those of you, like me, who can barely wait, there's a free stream of one of her new songs, 81' , over at drag city. i've been obsessively playing it on repeat.

grayson castro does zombies

god i hate / love zombies. they scare the hell out of me, really. some part of me thinks the future of humanity is zombies. owing to the powers of tumblr, i discovered grayson castro, who has a whole series of zombie portraits. this was my favorite, bloody and beautiful.

maya luz does bettlejuice

as i was voyaging on the internet last night, i came across a page discussing the new contestants on project runway. i haven't seen the show yet but they described maya luz as lydia from bettlejuice, who is one of my most coveted characters from film. i took a look at her site & was thrilled. i dig how she styles her models and her accessories are odd and lovely. i'd love to see bloodmilk paired with her clothes........

jessica tremp does the wolf

in to response to my last post, in which i didn't know the name of the photographer of the lovey first photo, little brown sparrow pointed the way (who also has an interesting blog). some of jessica tremp's work is filled with hints to nature and our romance with it's creatures, which really speaks to the work i've been sketching out, writing about and conjuring up new blood milk about. i know that at least a few of you will fall in love too......

in the mood for paris..........

i recently sent this off to paris. i was a little sad to see it go, but thrilled it has a home in france now. i think i've left a little eyelash of my heart there......
also, i just stumbled across this french blog. it has lovely inspirations and had screencaps from the movie 'in the mood for love' which has such beautiful coloring and patterns. secrets whispered into trees......

where have you been joshua petker?

although i tend to be drawn to work that has a tighter painting technique, i just love the looseness / movement in ca artist joshua petker's work. it seems that he has tightened up his female form; before there was smudged lipstick and wild hair, now there are 50's style dresses and tightly coifed tresses. every reckless lady grows up. well, at least on the outside......

jan toorop.

i recently discovered the work of dutch artist jan toorop. it seems like work i've been connected to all my life, i don't know how i've gone this long without it! his work will certainly be bountiful inspiration to me as i begin to gear up for my show at topstitch in april.

in other new newness:
i started a facebook fan page for blood milk. i plan on posting secrets & specials on here so if you're so inclined, become a fan.......
my review of chris berens show at sloan fine art in nyc 'the only living boy in new york' just went up on fecal face......

ken garduno does strange days

ken garduno is one of those artist's whose entire catalog of work is hysteria inducing. i imagine filling a whole wall with his strange inky lovelies. he's showing this weekend at subtext gallery with a couple friends in a show called 'strange days' in san diego. i kick myself every day for not being born a west coaster.

chris berens does new york city

last week i had the opportunity to see chris berens's amazing (!!!) solo show at sloan fine art. i wish i could say words aren't enough to describe the experience but i've been torturing myself over the review for days, for how do you write about something so big? i've finally (somehow) completed the review and just sent it over to fecal face. i'll post a link once it's up. for now i'll get some deeper sleep.

selling blood to the like-minded.

one of the (many) thrilling things about making jewelry is when other artists buy my work. a few weeks ago artist audrey kawasaki picked up a couple skull necklaces and added this photo to her blog:
this is my favorite piece of hers that i had the good fortune to snag a print of:
& this is a photo artist tamara waite-santibanez posted on her blog of an optical lens/vertebrae necklace she picked up at youngblood gallery all the way in atlanta! even thou she lives so close in nyc.
& this is some of her amazing art:

aganetha dyck does honey comb.

there is something so magnetic & strange about insects and their nesting habits. honey comb and wasp nests are these intricate networks of tunnels and hives made by these tiny busy thing with wings. while wasps tend to be rather nasty, bees have forged a prettier identity among the literary & art minded. i recently stumbled upon artist aganetha dyck who creates these amazing assemblages with honey comb and bees wax. She is interested in "inter species communication" & although her work is centered around the horrors of what might happen should the honey bee become extinct, i find it strange and lovely & hope to incorporate this idea into my new work.

odds and ends.

the lovely alana sent over these amazing pictures from across the sea of the custom blood milk piece she won in the last giveaway!

the start of a new year always fills me with an odd sense of dread and excitement, as if i get a new chance at righting all the mess ups of the previous year. this year we have a ton of amazing shows booked at the toothless cat gallery which i'm really thrilled about & i have 3 ! solo shows booked as well........i also hope to be working more on my novella/ book of short stories which i started in grad school ever so long ago.

3 solo shows:
april:
'catholica melancholia' portraits of the eternal virgin & the warrior st. joan of arc at topstitch.
july:
'planchette' divinatory collaborations with writer danielle vogel at amberella gallery.
september:
part time studios / theme still to be decided.

i will be writing a bit more for fecal face this year too, please look for my chris berens review to be up this week. currently i have my first interview ever with director erich wiess about his first film, hori smoku sailor jerry.

& lastly, i've already begun to work on new jewelry that i will begin listing in my shop in the middle of the week. if you have any ideas for a custom piece such as the one posted above send me a love note and we can work on one together.

what are you all dreaming up this new year?

bonni reid does anais nin.

while away, i delved further into the 3rd diary of anais nin. before, i believe i had only skimmed the surface of her work with my fingertips, feeling the slight essence of her work. this past week i read by the sea, perfumed myself with bonfire smoke and watched melting sunsets that looked like they came from dreams. anais's writings seem to be the perfect catalyst for the new year and i hope to make many deeper journeys into my work. this lovely painting of anais, created by bonni reid, is a portrait of her wearing what she wore to a surrealist 'come as your madness' party. lovely & odd, just the way i love it.
