lola.

Photobucket
lola's new show is finally up at corey helford gallery. her work has been a large inspiration to mine recently, most particularly her extraordinary color palette. i feel her work has gone through a serious growth, her compositions have changed, allowing for more space and air between her characters and their settings. among her paintings is even a fox masked lady, & strangely i've painted something similar...... i'm currently burrowed in my studio, finishing the last details on everything for my upcoming show this friday.
i hope to see some of you there!

eric eaton: matte black love

eric eaton is a local philly artist / / tattoo artist who makes the most incredible assemblages and sculptures, all in a signature matte black paint. i own a smaller, heart shaped one and it's one of my most favorite pieces in my collection. he just started a blog, matte black love.
adam wallacavage & i had a chance to create a studio visit with him that will be up on fecal face soon.

sneak peek: every girl goes to hell: buddy nestor

opening on april 3rd at my gallery, the toothless cat, is the highly anticipated solo show of artist buddy nestor, every girl goes to hell. the series depicts portraits of female artists who have transformed into melting, ghostly, strange creatures at the hands of buddy. the gallery will be filled with these portraits and i for one, am beyond excited to see them all collected together in hell. the above portrait is of my ghost room mate amanda moore, who has an amazing line of jewelry under adelina mictlan. if you're in philly or close, don't miss this show!

i am am i who am i : to whom it may concern.

i confess that i'm not as obsessed with you tube as i believe i could be, but when my friend paul sent me a link to this video,
simply titled 'b' by user iamamiwhoami i was instantly hooked.
to add to the mystique, no one knows who she is. there is a definite 'fever ray' vibe but it's hard to say for sure.
the video is haunting and beautiful. creepy and oddly peaceful.
i guess for now i'm part of the growing list of people waiting for a new video, or the big reveal.

studio envy: ann wood

i've loved ann wood's paper boats & stitched birds for a long time now. her brooklyn studio / home looks just as dreamy as her work, like being lost in a shadowy sea of antique lace and froths of creamy old pearls. . . .
things have yet to quiet down in my own studio & i look forward to hopefully having a few more pieces ready to sneak to you here.

magdalena wolan does pretty uglies

magdalena wolan draws 'pretty uglies' that make me nostalgic for the cartoons i watched as a kid. also, she has a penchant for femmes in masks, just as i do. take a peek at the rest of her work, i'm sure you'll dig it too.

she thinks she can warn the stars

'she thinks she can warn the stars' is the new title of my show of new paintings i've been bleeding all over lately. . .
it opens on good friday here in philly at the lovely topstitch boutique and features portraits of women based on the poem 'the black art' by anne sexton as well as my over infatuation with joan of arc. what i've been thinking about is the female as a complicated vessel, she is at once on the brink of madness while at the same time a bloody warrior. she has visions from 'god' but can't get out of bed to go food shopping. she is psychically in tune but can't foresee her own doom.

opening night will also be a special bloodmilk trunk show where i'll be unveiling a lot of the new jewels i've been working on, including all the teeth and claws i've cast recently. i'll be posting sneaks of these on my etsy shop, as i did with my sparrow claw rosary pieces, but the full line won't be available until after the trunk show.
happy beautiful weather east coasters.

PS a huge thank you to the highly talented paul romano for the card design.
i'm so lucky to have such an amazing group of talented friends.

studio envy: monica canilao

fecal face has just added new pictures of the beautiful & highly talented monica canilao's nyc home & studio. i'm teeming with jealousy, for at the moment, my studio is crammed into my bedroom and fully loaded with paint, wood panels, antique keyholes & brass skulls / / teeth.
if you're so inclined, take a peek at my first ever art review of a show monica did here in philly on juxtapoz.

'in two the one'
'the end-bicuspid'
'unveiled'
hilary white has an amazing show up right now at my gallery, the toothless cat, here in philly. these pieces are large, three dimensional 'altars' created with hand cut wood & acrylic and beautifully painted.

the ledge is a knife point.

whoa it's the apocalypse here in my studio right now! but i just got in these new tags for my jewelry & i love them so much! they are a mix of images from max ernst - olde circus act photos.
i'll be at both the art star craft bazaar this year & the renegade craft fair in brooklyn this year (with fleathers x rabid fox!) so i'll be buckling down to draw fresh blood over the next couple of months. can't wait to show you more of all the maddening things i'm toiling on. happy spring forward!

kelly tunstall does dark nights.

lately i've been thinking about black backgrounds. my painted ladies are always raven haired so this tends to be a bit of technical challenge. here thou, kelly tunstall makes different colored haired ladies just as elegant and interesting. i'll still be in knots over it these next few weeks, but i hope to have more to share on my paintings soon.
take a peek at her studio visit on FF here.

sooner or later you'll bury your teeth

i've started to get in the bits of bone & antique objects i've brought to the caster.
this is a palm full of wolf, black bear & fox teeth i've just gotten in. they will be treated and woven into rosaries, earrings, charm bracelets and rings. i will still be using real teeth in my work but i wanted to offer another option for those timid of bone. all these teeth were personally culled by me at native american pow-wows. look out for them in the shop soon.

paul romano: the book of them.

new work by paul romano. what lady doesn't love her own tome?
xo.
"The books are made up of my photographs I took over a number of years. Everything is printed cyanotype that I then toned. Each book is 32 pages plus the cover and meant to be a set. The books take their inspiration and titles from the show “He Said, She Said”. The story of the books is simple; He says snow and She says sky."

lori nix does apocalyptic miniatures.

lori nix photographs these incredibly detailed apocalyptic scenes in her 'the city' series. i am at once creeped out by the abandoned landscapes and amazed that these are actually miniature installations created before photographed. this satisfies both my obsessions with the apocalypse and miniatures.
thanks paul!

alice in wonderland in paris.

i'm sure many people are headed out to see tim burton's alice in wonderland this weekend. alas, i'll have to wait a few more weeks, but to hold me over for now, are these amazing editorial window displays in paris at printemps, featuring amazing designers such as the late mcqueen. it seems everyone is in on the alice buzz.

joan of arc as duelist.

i love it when i have the good fortune of finding one of these gun knives. by pairing it with a joan of arc medal & bleeding sacred heart, i'm suggesting a victorian duel in which our lady joan holds one of the pistols. perfect tones and a delicately detailed pistol make this one really special.
take a peek.

book lust.

while i've shut myself away in my third floor home studio painting and tinkering with strange jewels, i always think of my first love, books. i've been sleeping with books by brian evenson & stacey levine. i love everything about books, the smell of their pages; new and old, their spines and covers. i fell into an immediate dreamy lust when i saw these antique bookcovers, skinning everything from the bible to catherine de medici.
