blood & thistle. st. joan of arc.

Photobucket

Photobucket
one of the perks of living in philly is that i get to see this amazing joan of arc statue nearly everyday, as it rests at the end of my block near the philly art museum. however, it's been gone for months, being restored. it was promised back in the fall, but was just installed a few days ago. she's glowing and golden and i'm grateful she's home. to honor her return, i just made a new joan of arc necklace, blood & thistle.

kukula: sugar & blood sneak peek

Photobucket
kukula has updated her blog & she's posted a couple peeks of new work for her upcoming show, 'sugar & blood' at dorothy circus gallery in rome. the one above has me foaming at the mouth a bit with excitement over the black heart. her color palette has grown incredibly sophisticated and the melancholy yet confident expressions of her ladies are always hypnotizing. i can't wait to see the entire body of work next month.

fragilty.

Photobucket
lately i've been noticing the fragility of things in all aspects of my life. birth and death seem to go in a circle and so does everything else; the flowering tree in front of our row home is shedding, tiny pink petals cover the sidewalk like a carpet. the tiny of fist of my newborn nephew, the skulls & claws i've been molding, the water over ashes that spread like ink. life in the spring is up & down and i'm grateful and heavy with dreams & new ideas.
which brings me to scott campbell, who takes a traditional tattoo style and blends it with unexpected mediums to create really amazing objects. this graphite drawing within an eggshell really surprised me and seemed to fit right in to all that i've been stewing on.
he has a show up at oh-wow in nyc right now, hopefully i'll be able to get in to see it before it comes down next friday.

dear readers, whoever you are,
if you've been with me since the start, you may know that i am somewhat of an obsessive. objects //emotions // tumult // images snake their way around inside me, gripping some absurd part of my psyche. i can't not be this way no matter how hard i try not to be. the lady behind the curtain is a dweller, reaching a catalyst.

which brings me to bharti kher. i'm fully absorbed with the weight of her work.
i stumbled across her new show, 'inevitable undeniable necessary', which is going on right now at hauser & wirth in london, via the conjuring powers of tumblr last week. her bindi encrusted mirrors have captivated & cornered me in dreams. here, having placed a traditionally spiritual adornment, usually placed over the "third eye" of females, is used to transform antique and sometimes damaged mirrors. the bindis form beautiful patterns which explore both physical and emotionally deformity. i can only imagine what sort of distorted images viewers are able to see of themselves within the patterns. i wish i could see for myself.

Photobucket
my love and i took a field trip to nyc to see the tim burton show at the moma before it comes down next week. even though it was packed, it was wonderful. we even managed to sneak a few shots of bettlejuice things, which was surely my main motivation for going!

bloodmilk fauna.

Photobucket
i've been turning my full attention to the two amazing outdoor handmade events i'll be vending at this summer. lately, i've been working very closely with a master jeweler at creating molds of some specimens that have been in my collection, as well as new pieces of fauna i've been gathering for the new line of cast fauna that i'll have completed for the art star craft bazaar , this may 15 & 16. i recently found this replica screech owl skull and am in awe of it's incredible detail and beauty. it's headed towards a new life as a huge cocktail ring. it will also be woven into neck adornments and anything else i can dream up. secondly is the amazing bumble bee. it must have flown into my room and passed away, having landed near my writing desk in this exact state. two years ago i had a strange occurrence happen with a bird around the same time and i can't but help take this as an omen that i'm working towards & moving along the right path. look for these pieces in my etsy shop over the next few weeks!

'she thinks she can warn the stars': sneak peek

Photobucket
" i have a black look i do not
like. it is a mask i try on."
-anne sexton

this is my favorite painting from my show that opens tomorrow. lately i've become obsessed with foxes, as i've shared here. i've cast a perfect fox tooth and a perfect fox claw for jewelry making and now i've made this raven haired lady with a fox mask. my intention was that she has an eye in her palm, kind of like an all seeing eye, telling fortunes or stories, or all the dark whispers of the cosmos. but since you can't see it, it's just my little secret threaded in.
i made prints of this too and will re-open a print shop on etsy soon.
