wreathed up in circles, eternally without heads.

Photobucket

these days i've been obsessed with the idea of space. the psychic spacial distance between the city and one's self. between a house and one's self. between a room, between a love. how these spaces and proximity inform and design the inner landscapes of the self, ever curling inward, guarded in armor.

which brings me to ammonites.

these brilliant fossils are the evidence of an extinct sea life species that swam ancient seas & armored themselves in mother of pearl. their pearlescent exterior, coupled with their complex curling spiral shape make them incredibly beautiful. but it is their mythology that attracts me the most. it is written that the shores of whitby were swarmed with a plague of snakes that were cured by the will of st. hilda who turned all the snakes to stone or what are now known as ammonites. this is how they received their second name, 'snakestones'

i've already gotten my hands on a few of these jewel fossils and am working out designs. in the meantime i'm having a late night love affair with the writings of anthony doerr, who's newest book, memory wall, is due in just a few short weeks and whose cover is graced with rows of ammonites.

ps. thank you to all of you who have recommended books. i'm still trying to track down some of them in the library. please add to the list if you have not done so. or just take a look if you are in need of a good book, the list is quite lovely thus far.

a touch of blood red to quicken the pulse.

paper cutting seems to me to be as mysterious as playing the accordion or archery; things i want to learn how to do one day but am mystified by. drawing with tiny blades and scissors seems so poignant to me. until i dig up the time to learn myself, i always fall for elsa mora's whimsical & slightly morbid work.

the endless love letter.... .. . .. . ...

absentia is the one word i couldn't live without. which coincidentally is also part of the title of a brother's quay film, 'in-absentia' which was the inspiration for photographer christina brown's approach of shooting my work on the lovely lindsay for phase 1 of my look book. the film was based on the strange obsession of a woman in an asylum to write love letters to a man who never visits. here's both a clip of the film & a peek at some of the photos:

stepping into the fire.

Photobucket

burning up by riikka sormunen.

i've started to paint work for a show that has been a year in the making, a conversation of images and text, a divinatory process/ experience / experiment. you may have caught whispers of this before, as this show was set to go on several times before and had always been pushed back, but now will wash ashore here in philly in august. painting in the summer is my absolute favorite. the light lasts longer. everything feels lazy yet urgent. i'm always hot and expedient. turmoil and sleep. endless research & the purging. & so it begins!

the kiss anne sexton

my mouth blooms like a cut.
i've been wronged all year, tedious
nights, nothing but rough elbows in them
and delicate boxes of kleenex calling crybaby
crybaby , you fool !

before today my body was useless.
now it's tearing at its square corners.
it's tearing old mary's garments off, knot by knot
and see -- now it's shot full of these electric bolts.
zing! a resurrection!

once it was a boat, quite wooden
and with no business, no salt water under it
and in need of some paint. It was no more
than a group of boards. but you hoisted her, rigged her.
she's been elected.

my nerves are turned on. i hear them like
musical instruments. where there was silence
the drums, the strings are incurably playing. you did this.
pure genius at work. darling, the composer has stepped
into fire.

lately i've been thinking of "the otherness."
how are we to measure all that we accomplish all that we fail at? i've been dreaming of having more limbs, more hands, more legs to move around on.

elevation.

Photobucket
Photobucket
yesterday i had the good fortune of rounding up 2 talented and gorgeous friends to help with phase i of what will ultimately be an ongoing project; making a look book. the intelligent and lovely christina brown is a talented photographer with a great eye and smart approach. i'm literally foaming at the mouth in anticipation of what she'll do with the 500+ photos she took of lindsay yesterday. thanks again ladies!

this project comes into eclipse with my wanting to elevate my commitment to bloodmilk, which has hopefully been evident over the last few months. it's my desire to continue to create wearable pieces and to add new, bolder, editorial pieces into my work that are equally as wearable but edging a bit more on the absurdly marvelous. this project will be ongoing over a long period of time and will hopefully include other models and photographers, as i've recently had the opportunity to meet lovely new people at the renegade craft fair, such as the talented jeremy dyer.
also, as promised, i just re-wrote my etsy profile, which outlines the philosophies, obsessions and beliefs that serve as a backdrop to bloodmilk and all of my work. take a peek here.

ps thanks to all of you who have been commenting on the post below. please do so if you haven't yet.......
pps. those are margaux kent's from the black spot books lovely photographs in the background of the first photo. you can find prints of them in her shoppe.

dear reader, please help.

Photobucket
dear readers,
i feel as if i've been released, as if i've resurfaced from a time spend underwater holding my breath. i had been working on all new bloodmilk since january, the efforts of which have been revealed on etsy & at renegade bk (some pieces are still under wraps but will be brought to light soon!). it has been months of blood, tears, huge mistakes and turbulent trials. everything i believed in had been called into the interrogation room yet i feel triumphant and exhausted .......................and in need of a good book.
which is why i'm asking for you to help! i need some suggestions. my tastes ranges from speculative fiction (kelly link, karen russell) to the apocalyptic sci-fi (matthew derby) to the poetic and strange (geek love by katherine dunn, anything by the glorious stacey levine.) do you have any suggestions for me while i spend a few days in bed recovering?

the dividing.

Photobucket
Photobucket
photos by: lissy elle

when you are so close to your work, it's sometimes hard to separate your critical mind from the one going a mile per second, & sometimes happy accidents occur, new thought patterns arise. i'm thisclose to my jewels these days & the new thoughts are centered around WHY i'm making them, what inner functions they have opposed to their outer aesthetics. i've been meaning to re-write my profile on etsy and as soon as this weekend is over i will do so. for now, i've been thinking of proximity. how close one image is to the other & what it can do for a composition, the emotional reaction of it's viewer. objective chance: how images or objects can seem unrelated, but are secretly related. the joining of images can have a subtle reaction, or a real convulsiveness. ( for example, what does the addition of blood do to you in the first photo? compared to it's absence in the second?) it is this idea that i'm most interested in right now while playing with the forms of my jewels. the dividing and joining. which leads me to these images of severed limbs in the forest. they are connected to the darkness of fairytales & yet with the missing wolf they create a new image, somewhat disjointed from their original inspiration. a new life from an old story, which is another incarnation of exactly what i'm doing in my work.

i was also attracted to these images because i've had a big thing for severed limbs in general, which all stemmed from marci washington. also, my hands feel like they are going to fall off.

PS this week is the 2 year anniversary of bloodmilk.(!!!) i usually celebrate with a giveaway, but this has been postponed until the week of june 11 where it will be hosted on one of the most fantastic sites. details soon!

sing a song of six-pence, a pocket full of rye.......

Photobucket
Photobucket

digging in a little deeper to why i create the work i create:
the harpy eagle is the most magnificent beast of all the birds of prey, literally the size of a toddler. it should be mythical be all means, as it certainly derives it's name from mythology. the harpies, or sirens of lore, were beautiful but deadly hybrids, part bird and part luscious woman, a winged sphinx gifted with the song of death. casting the talon of the bird has given way to an immortalization of this bird in brass and sterling. it is nearly 3 times the size of a bald eagle claw & is a solid piece. i've been wearing one all these weeks since it first came to fruition. soon, after the maddness of renegade has quelled, it will live in a few other incantations too, re-imagined into other wearable forms.
back to work.......

owl light.

Photobucket
yesterday we travelled to a nearby reservation and attended a wonderful powwow. we gorged ourselves on fry bread & walked around the woods. just as we were getting ready to leave, we happened upon a little stand at the end of the row of vendors where a falconer had his hawks clipped to wooden beams. there was also a great horned owl perched atop a tree trunk. we must have stood there for atleast 45 minutes watching the birds and talking with the falconer under the opressive heat. i've never seen any of these birds up so close before and it was truly an amazing experience! i believe it really enchances all of the recent castings i've been doing of bird parts and making me more aware of the true beauty these birds have.
the above painting, 'the owler' is part of the new work by jessica dalva that's over at la luz right now. i'm a big fan of her sculptures as well so pop over and take a look!
