a discourse on childhood.

Photobucket
Photobucket

i was once asked what i thought to be 'taboo' by an artist doing research & while i find that many strange things often attract me, i thought anything that mars the innocence of a child is taboo. childhood is such a magically potent place, a realm in which all things are possible; invincibility, magic, & the prospect of true happiness. capturing this in a painting is quite difficult . . .

artist jana brike offers up a new body of work, 'the book of taboo' at distinction gallery. i'll admit, i've felt iffy about this artist for awhile, but i feel warmed by her new work. yes, some of it nearly crosses the line for me, as if to poke a (feminine) stick at the young milk skinned nudes male artists conjure in the "scene", but still there seems to be a vibrant potency in this challenge of "taboo". the artist explains that the portraits are an image of  "the "child" archetype, which represents a human state with the analytic mind in a slumber condition & with [a] wide-awake hyperactive id." i think the work is challenging & stunning in what it uncovers about childhood & by nature, adulthood. it stands on the tenuous fault line, at once hypnotic with it's beauty, colors & settings & at the same, quite viscerally provocative.

for further reading, take at this post by the artist about her new show.

on the eve of the end . . .

lately it's been absolutely wretched here in philly. the ceaseless rain drenches everything & nothing can warm me. i sleep on the bed sideways and read books about the surrealists & the occult.

the thunder reminds me of when i was a child and thought it meant the end of the world, of the sky literally being ripped open. i also thought it meant a time for monsters, their time to sneak out of wherever they were hiding to wreck evil . . . .

these imaginings haven't faded as much as i'd like them to..... & yet somewhere in all this supernatural worrying, the world is caught up with worry for the end of the world, again. when i was in grad school i was absolutely obsessed with apocalyptic fiction. but lately i see that it all ends the same somehow, with the sky ravaged, people dirty and eating each other & no god in sight. what if the end of the world truly meant the end of the world ? a black blindness, a white light ?

these colored pencil drawings from italy based marco mazzoni have a hint of apocalyptic wonder, of self annihilation & divine light ..... i wrote a mini review of these stunning works over at hi-fructose.

the multiverse.

Photobucket

have you heard about the new theories on the multiverse? i'm always simultaneously terrified and thrilled when bits of sci-fi creep over into science. the idea of a multiverse, a series of parallel universes in which we each may be leading different lives within the same body/mind/spirit freaks me out & intrigues me....
these manipulated / distorted collages by lola dupré remind me of this theory, the idea of being fragmented, an 'other' to yourself while still retaining recognizable marks & features . . . .

my adventurer friend jeremy hush scales walls to mine abandoned, haunted places, carrying organ pipes and bone and other precious debris home to compose his world of lost and forgotten things. he draws with a ballpoint pen, tender yet sharp images, imbued with the ghosts of clockworks, pale hands bent in prayer to unknown gods and the damp feathers of dark birds. i love his work and above are his newest pieces from 'a threaded whisper' showing now at philly's part time studios

the fictional girl and her mouse bones.

Photobucket

Photobucket

a while back i got a note from one of my favorite fiction writers, stacey levine, about a possible collaboration between her words & my jewels. ( besides having one of my 'super fan' freak outs) i thought of possible ways to turn her strange, visceral, surreal words (all the things i love best in a writer) & of the story of 'the girl' which is a story within her new book of tales & stories 'the girl with brown fur' into a piece of bloodmilk.

in the story, a feral girl is leashed to a man within the hallway of a hotel. the narrator watches the girl from his/her room and decides to steal her. in the odd descriptions of the girl, we find she is wearing a necklace of mouse shaped beads and later on, we see that she has a strange X shaped scar on her body.
this was the starting point for me, which resulted in this subtle/ slight necklace made of mouse bones cast immortal in sterling silver, sourced from an owl pellet.

for me, stacey's writings have always been a great inspiration. her tales are odd and always strike me on a personal level, i've been reading her work for years (as a fiction student in my mfa program). her words put you in a trance & yet reveal something hidden about yourself. for me, i identified with the scar on the body of the girl as a childhood surgery has left me with an ugly scar in the worst of places. this necklace emulates that feeling of unconscious strangeness within the body while emulating stacey's writings. the choice of mouse bones reflects how small we can feel sometimes as well as the image of the feral girl 'swatting' at her mouse shaped beads.

as part of a special give a way, i'm offering one reader the first, original version of this necklace & stacey is offering a signed copy of her new book 'the girl with brown fur.'

to enter, take a peek at the description of the book here.
or read this recent review of the book over here at bookslut.
& leave comment to this post on what about the book interests you, why you would read it.
a winner will be chosen at random on friday the 13th.

the dissemination of the secrets.

Photobucket

Cuban artist Belkis Ayón Manso creates these amazing dark works based on the Abukuá Secret Society:

"I aspire above all to give my vision, my points of view as observer, presenting in a synthesized form the aesthetic, plastic, and poetic aspects I discovered in Abakuá, persistently relating them to the nature of man, with vivid personalities, with feelings which sometimes grip us, feelings we don't know how to define, with these fugitive emotions…with the spiritual."

i found very little on her as her works aren't allowed to leave cuba, but if you do a google image search you can see more of her terrific work.

firstly, thanks to everyone who showed support during death & taxes, even if you were unable to partake. it means so much to me to hear how you enjoy your piece of bloodmilk. i feel incredibly lucky to have such amazing supporters!

lately i've been feeling artistically fractured, simultaneously working on a new, full line of bloodmilk, a new painting for the upcoming alchemy show at observatory, & many exciting writing endeavors. these collages by claire pestaille remind me of this feeling, this splitting. new things on the horizon!

psyche in flux.

Photobucket
Photobucket

lately i've been reading 'alchemy' by marie-louise von franz (by suggestion of lovely parisa) which outlines jungian approaches to the symbols and psychology of inner alchemy. this has been in lieu of the painting i'm working on for 'alchemically yours' which opens at the observatory in brooklyn on may 7th. i feel as if i'd be instinctually working towards this center with my last body of paintings and with my new jewels ( & jewels in progress!), which subtly feature alchemical symbols.

the root of all of this is the desire for my psyche to be whole. i dream of veiny mushroom heads and a house near the sea, of olde friends sharing a dinner table. of running in the snow and running near the sea, always away from someone and always with one of these olde friends. somehow i feel these digital works by catrin arno symbolize that feeling of unrest and the transitory realm i find myself in these days.

tomorrow i'll have some official news on part one of my bi-annual bloodmilk sale, in honor of death & taxes . . . .!

holy hell i'm obsessed with allyson mellberg's work.

her new series, 'the lotus eaters' opened recently in paris, the city of all of my crystalline dreams. her work makes me feel comforted & yet strange, as if her figures inner most selves are being breached by an obtrusive, otherworldly life. while i'm not sure if these are welcome intrusions or necessarily good ones, i see so many parallels in my own life, the feeling of being overwhelmed by natural cosmic forces of which i can't control. i wrote a few more formal words over here at hi-fructose.

ghost world.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

i'm obsessed with the notion and mystery of the afterlife. this obsession is tied and knotted into nearly everything i make as i'm constantly questing to see or hear or feel a manifestation of the supernatural.

these photographs were created by piecing together images of a man who's body, after being donated to science, had been encased in gelatin and then thinly sliced to reveal his anatomy at magnified level. that this man was a convicted murderer who was executed, adds to the tension of how his body was used by science and the subsequent re piecing of his "body" to ghostly effect. take a peek at more of the photos by croix gagnon & frank schott and read the full story here.

i've . . .

Photobucket
Photobucket

i've been restless. dreaming of apocalypses & speaking with the dead. meeting the light & the dark every day, in secret, in the street.

i've been collecting phantom quartz stones for new jewels & i've been obsessed with waxing the boa constrictor rib bones into everything.

i've been reading books on carl jung & alchemy, seeking the signs & symbols of a lost magical language.

i've been staying in bed too long & then not long enough. i'm excited april is here. it carries the hum of metamorphosis.

this snake skin dress is a spell, a ritual. a shedding and then a re-stitching. incredible.

"I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you—especially when you are near me, as now; it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land come broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I’ve a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly."

go see this movie, alone if you can.
