magic colored pencils

i've previously posted about both lilly piri & fumi mini nakamara, so i'm thrilled that they currently have a joint show up at thinkspace right now. i love love love work done in colored pencil. it has a soft, dreamy effect that i melt over. the subtle details and near flawless execution of the medium by these two makes me wish i lived in california just so i could go and stare at these drawings everyday. i'm especially in awe of the above pieces, the shape shifter series by fumi and this lovely rendition by lili of helen of troy being hatched from her egg. she was one of the twins conceived by leda via zeus as a swan.

brandi milne

brandi milne has a new show up at thinkspace gallery. her color palette is more earthy toned than usual and the animal/food/ghostly characters have a lovely nostalgic/creepy feel to them. the work as a whole reminds me of vintage advertising with camille rose garcia influence. some of the paintings were created on antique book covers, further illuminating the vintage feel of the show.  as always, i'm a big fan on conjoined twins and love the text in this piece. check out the rest of the show here.

Love for moody Russians......

It's only ever so often that I find an artist who's entire catalog of past paintings and anticipation of future paintings so irresistibly mouth watering. One of my biggest influences is Canadian artist Jon Todd. He's having a new state side show, 'Life Sentence' over at the pop surrealist mecca ThinkSpace gallery, which opens December 12 for all you lucky L.A folk. The new work seems to contain the trademarks of his older works: tattooed females cavorting with snakes and menacing men against highly patterned backgrounds, but with a more specific focus on Russian prison tattoos and political culture, implying much more darker moods. Above is 'Snake Pit', his impressive new painting used in all the press for the show and below is 'The Snake Handler", which I was lucky to purchase last year. I look forward to seeing the show in its entirety, but thankfully for me and you, there is a sneak preview over here.
XOXO

The Drawing Room

Audrey setting up her installation in the front room of Think Space.
Like many of us "pop surrealist' art collectors out there, I have a special type of hysteria reserved for the highly talented Audrey Kawasaki. Upcoming this friday night at PS mecca ThinkSpace gallery in CA is a show featuring drawings by Miss Kawasaki and an entourage of her equally talented friends, some who have established art careers and others who are recieving their much deserved spot in the lime light.

I especially adore this wood drawing by Audrey. I have been following her career since college on her LiveJournal and am lucky to own a few of her prints and to have been able to see her breathtaking work in person when she showed here in Philly through the now defunct Lineage gallery. (R.I.P)

Liza Corbett is a fellow member of the Etsy team I belong to, Cabinet of Curiosities. I greatly admire her work and dig her Etsy shop where you can buy prints and originals.

Fumi Nakamura is another lovely lady I followed on her LiveJournal years ago. I have a lovely original from her and love to see that she's doing so well. She works mainly in colored pencils, a medium that is one of my favorites.
